I think that same theory applies to writing fiction. Even when you dream about someone you know in real life, you’re really dreaming about the way in which that person’s traits represent a fraction of you. I once read that when we’re dreaming, every character in our dreams represents a part of our self. And while I don’t have an alter ego who writes for me anymore, I think I have a legion of alter egos who manifest through my writing. I grew up and those forbidden topics are now commonplace to me. But the point is, it was really FUN to have that alter ego and through her, I was able to write the things I wanted to write about without judging myself for it, since in a sense, it wasn’t me writing, it was my alter ego. What I mean by all that is that I was writing smutty fan fiction. I think that it was really just part of a teenage rebellion against the societal norms and an exercise in finding my own limitations. For a period of about two years I thought that in order to challenge myself, I should write things that were outside the boundaries of what were acceptable topics. Her name was Marilyn, and she was a more grown up version of me with gothier clothes and a pair of cat’s eye glasses– kind of a be-speckled X-23.

Since this is a writing blog, I’ll focus on literary alter egos. He said “It’s my alter ego” and laughed, and it was never brought up again, but it made me curious: how many other normal, everyday people have alter egos? I once asked him to make a Mii of himself for my Wii and instead of a sandy redhead with a goatee, he created a gaunt looking man with black hair and eyeliner whom he named ‘Zeno’.
